Workhorse Fire Apparatus

Developing Your Specs to Save Money

Apparatus Builders will always try to get you into something that they build on a regular basis.  It's more efficient, cost-effective and less intensive for them.  But there are many items that you need built or made specifically for your agency or department to ensure that the functionality is adequate and also to reduce training time among other items.

To quickly get you the best information, I've bullet-pointed a few items here which I hope will help you:

  • Determine what you must have and be specific with it.  If you want a Waterous, Hale or CET 18 HP Gas Portable Pump, provide the model number.  But conversely, if you do not need to have a specific pump, simply put "18 HP Gas High Pressure Pump".  The more items that are generic the more you can expect pricing from various manufacturers to vary.  But those prices will also be better.
  • Only customize those items which you must.  The more basic a proposal is, the better the pricing will be.\
  • If you have a lot of customizations, you'll probably want to avoid certain vendors and go with a custom shop where all we do is build to your exact speec and make minor recommended changes to you.
